Just when you thought they couldn't surprise you

Tuesday, March 11, 2008 by Bethany

Two items today--completely unrelated, though both on the surprise angle.

Number one. The Kiddo. Woke up today excited for pre-school. This is really quite normal. And pleases me to no end. Especially since he is entering Kindergarten in the fall. I can only hope that these feelings continue when he joins the ranks of what most people call "real school." Generally, I didn't have a problem with school. Like it even. At least until middle or high school when cliques and popularity suddenly was more important than the grades. Oh. And that thing called boys. They suddenly were more interesting, even though they weren't really into giving me a second glance. But I am digressing.

The surprise this morning, was after handing him a pile of pants from the dryer to choose as his attire for the day--he put the remaining pants away. Unasked.

Seriously, I walked back into his room to ask him if he'd brushed his teeth and was ready to go (which, he did and was), and it was clean. Pants nowhere in sight. I asked him, ever-so-nicely, "Did you put your pants away?" So innocently he responded, "Yep." And walked towards the door to put on his shoes and jacket. I swear, he's a teenager waiting to happen. At 5.

Now, for surprise 2. I have another home online at POSHmama.com. In fact, I write a weekly book recommendation column. Love the women, love the site owner, and well, have a good time talking fashion, books, gossip, and tech toys for the baby and me. It's about being a haute Mom, what's not to love?

Well, these lovely ladies (yep, you have to be a woman to sign up), honored me with an ity bity award today! Can you believe it? Seriously. I'm a bit verklepped. Or something. People VOTE for these.... and they picked, um me? I was never one for the popular crowd (like I said), so this is more than surprising, it is just flattering. Poshmama's out there... I'll wear the tiara proudly! Really. I twill look FABULOUS on the new still red hair. Oh and if you want to head on over to join us? Feel free, it's a fun little party we have going on.

That's it. I'm done with surprises for today. Not unless another good one drops on my lap. God knows, life wouldn't be fun without those.

Some Haunts

Thursday, November 08, 2007 by Bethany

In the past few months, I've found a few haunts on the web that have sucked away at my time.

The first, if you haven't heard of it yet, you are really stuck under a rock, it is Twitter. It is a short form of blogging--and you have friends and followers, and well, it is based on a simple question: What are you Doing? Answer it, and you have created your first Tweet. If you're interested, sign up here. And add me as a follower (bethanyh).

Now the other. This one consumes even MORE time. POSH Mama. It's for girls only (sorry guys) and a social network for moms (mostly, but you can join if you aren't a mom!). It talks about fashion, fun crafty things, all things children, and of course lets you find a network of mothers with similar interests. Join in discussions and groups, and leave a note on comment walls. But, I'd be lying if I didn't say there was some self-promotion involved here. I was asked my Posh Mama herself to help out--my book reviews are being featured weekly on Fridays. So, if this is up your alley, feel free to stop on by and sign up yourself. Let 'em know I sent you... and of course enjoy the great haute mamas!

Oh, and I can't forget LoveOfReading.com. Seriously, it is a great combination of sharing good books with readers and promoting authors. You can enter book raffles, read author blogs, listen to author interviews, read book excerpts, read reviews, and take part in an online book fair! I love book fairs--I was the kid in high school that had to trim down her pile of books before she could purchase them when the book fair hit our local library (and school library). I am totally in love with the idea of an online book fair. So please stop by the site between November 14 and 16 from 10am - 8pm EST. I'll love you for it!

Prompt Writing at its Finest

Wednesday, November 29, 2006 by Bethany

I'm always asked how I get my ideas for my novels. And I don't have a straight answer. Sometimes I get inspiration while washing my hair in the shower. Or driving to/from work.
When I am lying next to my feverish son in the wee hours of the morning. Or even just as I am about to drift off to sleep myself. They come from everywhere.

Blog posts on the other hand--since I try to post daily--are a bit harder to sustain. As you can see from some of the dribble I write here, aren't always as planned as I would like (or thought out). So, from time to time, I've turned to the blessed Internet to help me. And boy, is there a lot to be had out there.

Right now my favorite daily writing prompt site is from the Writer's Digest (link here). I haven't publicly posted any of my responses on this blog yet for fear of laughing myself silly, but this site is a real treasure.

First, the writing prompts aren't full of that rudimentary crap. Oh you remember them. Think back to high school English or Creative Writing 101 in college. Writing assignment number 1: Free write about the word Love. Ready. Set. Go.

...

Did you feel like grabbing a pen and spiral notebook and writing til your wrist hurt?

Neither did I.

So, since I started this little ole blog of mine, I've been on the hunt for a good writing prompt generator. Something that is clever, entertaining, and motivates one to actually write more than the free write classic, I don't know what to write. I don't know what to write. I don't know what to write. (For those of you not familiar with the free write exercise. You write for about fifteen minutes, NONSTOP until some timer rings. I cope with the I-don't-know-what-to-write dilemma by filling the page with the exercise mantra).

Anyway, back to topic. I love the Writer's Digest Writing Prompts because they are above all else motivating. Original. Funny. And hell at least a bit more intriguing than the old classics. Don't believe me? Well take a look at today's little ditty:
Santa Claus is considering retirement and is looking for a successor. You’ve decided to apply for the gig. Explain why you should be the next Santa, and what changes you’d make to the North Pole workshop.*
Don't tell me your mind wasn't reeling after the first sentence. Santa Claus. Successor. Hell, that could be an ENTIRE novel at this point.

....

Right?

Well maybe it is just the writer in me. But hey, give them a looksee trust me. You'll find at least one of the prompts that strikes your fancy. And what's writing 500 words when I write 80,000 word novels?

* My response to this prompt is incoming. I think I may have found a new obsession. It might even entice me to start a regular writing prompt response feature on the blog. What do you think?
