Things Learned on an Emergency Quick Trip Away

Sunday, June 25, 2006 by Bethany

It seems fate had a hand in my weekend (and a relative stranded at O'Hare Airport). A few hours into what I would normally call a Friday work day morning I was traveling Up North (to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan). I won't go into specifics, because I still reeling in the traveling hangover but I did learn a few things:
  • why the hell haven't driver pans been invented? You know some device so that mother's traveling alone with child can take a piss at 1:30am without having to wake said child and haul their ass into a gas station restroom.

  • Starbucks roadsigns. Hell, I'll take any coffee joint's road sign. McDonald's has joined the bandwagon--I get to see they one exists at every damned exit from Chicago to Marquette. Why can't the coffee chains get with the program. Some of us are desperate for our caffeine fix. Especially when I'll be up past my bedtime.

  • inoperable VPN connections for work? A complete bitch.

  • ditto for the whole packing, unpacking, re-packing, and the unpacking thing.

  • a toddler deciding this weekend was the time to start *really* testing his limits--intolerable. Especially when his angel aura returned right when we returned back home to his father.

  • travel DVD players are a Godsend. Same with small electronics called handheld gaming systems (see comment above--mom traveling with kid alone).

  • Arriving home late the day BEFORE the weekend is over to recoup. Priceless. And likely stupid since I'll spend the day lying around wishing I were sleeping. But at least I am home. And not alone.
Til tomorrow... when I can think better!
