The Challenges of Present Shopping with Toddler

Friday, June 16, 2006 by Bethany

In true Friday style, I've ignored writing for other things. Like work, napping, sweltering in high-90s heat, and shopping for the Father's Day presents I should have purchased weeks in advance. But, I'm a procrastination sorta girl when it comes to these things. And hell, I work better under pressure. At least that is what I have convinced myself.

Anyway, onto the present purchasing madness--since that is, by far, the more interesting of today's distractions from writing this blog post and various other writing projects awaiting my attention. Oh and that thing called work. Shopping with the kid always brings on challenges. Once that have changed over time since he is now old enough to walk, talk, and have an opinion about these things called presents. And the fact that if we are purchasing a present for ANYONE, he demands a present as well. So, that is where we started. The $1 bins. And of course a present for the wee one.

Then the challenge began. We let the kid choose the present from him. So, we wander aisle after aisle looking for the gift HE wants to purchase. Steering him to any location--ones where, I don't know, the husband might actually like something--is impossible. And it takes hours. And then he chooses the one item that is out of stock. Three stores later, we decide on something else. Something husband won't wear but only for the son. But, hey, it is what he wanted to but for "Dad Day," can I say no? Apparently not.

For my present, I took the easy way out. A shirt he's been eyeing up since forever and a gift certificate for his daily coffee. Sure, I know. It's lazy. It's almost cheating. But it's the thought that counts. It's the fact that I wrote a heart felt message in the card for him. TELLING him how much I love and cherish him. And the fact that he deals with me.

I'd like to say that we waiting until Sunday for the unveiling--but again the 3 year old took over. And that meant Dad gets his presents right away. And so he did. And so it is our Virtual Father's Day today. With breakfast near the bedroom on Sunday.
