Oh the Impossible Dream

Wednesday, May 24, 2006 by Bethany

I dream big. I mean gigantic-I-will-never-in-a-million-years get/do/achieve that--unless of course the world tilts and all human nature totally freaks out kinda dreams. As silly (and unrealistic) that it sounds--it is the only way to dream.

How else are you going to push yourself to do more for yourself (and even better) than to raise the bar at an impossible height? It's easy. Fun. And imaginative. And it sure as hell fills some blog posts. So, here, let's practice--so you too can make your own set of Impossible Dreams.

We'll do an easy one (well they all are if you've got a twisted mind like mine)-- my novels. Here's the fantastic dream set up:

Sell novel. Get a multibook deal (for the sake of silliness let's say 10 book deal). And then within a few days, let's add a movie deal in the works. We settle on the book deal, we get a quickened release date (under 6 months) and there is next to no edits (see? this little ditty is a TOTAL dream... the editing part? never happen in a million years. Under 6 month release? Ha!). The book releases with a huge ass party with lots of celebrities, publishing high-ups, and me-- fabulously dressed, tailored and looking, um FABULOUS in my size 10 dress and stiletto heels (remember, my dream. I can look however I want). And then magically, I can quit my day job and write full time. And still afford a sitter for the kid during the day while I write. Or hey, the husband can quit too! Then there is Oprah. Stunning reviews. Thousands flock to bookstores to buy the book (and wait all night in the rain).... and well, you get the idea.

This Big Ass Dream never ends. I can make twists, turns, and a whole bunch of fabulous nothing. That is part of the fun. And part of the ridiculousness of it all.

Now, I know that the reality of this dream is impossible. If not for the book deal it is the size 10 dress thing and stilletos. Trust me when I say the jeans will never snap and I sure as hell can't walk in THAT high of heels. But the truth beneath the fantastic part of the dream IS obtainable.

Can I sell a novel? Sure. Multiple novels? Yep, I can. Eventually. How about the movie deal? If I am very very very lucky. And also with the release party, and the idea of good reviews--as well as people going to the bookstore and accidentally purchasing a book I wrote. All of those more realistic parts of the dream could indeed come true.

And that is why I Dream the Impossible Dream. The fantastic part of the make-believe gives way to the realistic--and hell, I just like seeing the expression on someone's face when I say that Oprah will endorse a novel I have yet to be published. The expression is priceless.
