10 Reasons to Not Go to Work Today

Tuesday, May 23, 2006 by Bethany

In an effort to keep myself sane, I'd love to stay home from work for one of those recharge days.* But my twisted little brain has to come up with enough reasons as to why. Otherwise, I do my duty and arrive faithfully at the front door with my work face on. It's twisted isn't it? Anyway, you ready?
  1. I'm tired. But hey, that's a given on any day. But I (stupidly) stayed up late to watch the TiVo'd finale of some show I was crying about ending. Damn them! The writer's hearts were SO NOT into it. Come on! We could so tell..... How could you people write such crap? [shaking my head in disgust]
  2. I could be doing all the things I have to get done before the weekend. Laundry. Dishes (well many dishes until Friday). Weeding (we have a forest in our flower beds). Call the driveway sealer people to get an estimate (at the very least). Get the new propane tank for the grill. Write my novel. You see? The list can go on and on and on...
  3. Take a much desired (and likely needed) nap. See number 1 above.
  4. Get a pedicure. I haven't had one in a year. Or more.... (looking at nail chipped toes)... likely more. And I just love being pampered. Who doesn't?
  5. Eat an actual breakfast. A real breakfast with all the various side dishes I want. Biscuits. Strawberry Jam. Large orange juice. Cup of oatmeal. Restaurant brewed coffee... again the list is longer than my novel. And I hadn't even gotten to the main dish.
  6. Get the oil changed and tires rotated on the car (and likely the same on the truck since we are that far behind on maintenance).
  7. Satisfy my handbag and hair product fetish. Cause I can always use a new purse and I might as well look damn good when I buy it.
  8. Take one of those long, winding walks in the countryside to clear my head. [Pause] Yes. Don't look at me like that. I always talk about taking a walk. Just never do it. The countryside part? Well, at least in a forest preserve. Or trail somewhere. We have those in Chicago.
  9. Finish painting the living room and hallway. It's been in the almost stage for 6 months or more.
  10. Which reminds me of the basement o' clutter. Yeah, that needs to be sorted, cleaned, decluttered, and all the mess hauled out.
Or I could do nothing. Which is likely the best option for a recharge day. But you and I both know it won't happen. This Call In To Work list-- well it could be a list I have any other day of the week. And even though it is compelling, it doesn't quite cut it. At least compared to the Work To Do list for the week. It's one of those--if I miss today, what will be in store for me tomorrow scenarios. And you know what that means. Suit up! We're going to work.

*We have Paid Time Off. So I wouldn't be lying to a soul if I called in and just said, "I'm not coming in." Gotta love it! Well, if you're not me. The over-compulsive, over-achiever, who can never think of reasons NOT to go in except sickness. And today, other than the drugged feelings of tired, I am not sick. Far from it. Sigh. I need to rethink this going back to the office work thing....
