Cusack FanGirl Lives Here
I think it started with Say Anything. Or Sixteen Candles. Or maybe it was just that it was the 80s, I was in my pre-teen/teen years and I had a connection. You know, the whole I-see-you-in-a-movie-and-your-character-was-so-sweet-and-you-are-too thing? Or maybe because he just seemed like your average guy--not the heart throb that was SO, like, drop dead gorgeous you knew you NEVER had a chance at impressing. I don't know--but count me as a HUGE John Cusack fan. HUGE.
It was an agreement upon agreeing to be a couple between my now husband and myself right from the beginning--John Cusack movies are a must-see. No discussion. If he is starring in a show, we MUST go see it. Or rent it. There is no negotiation--he either chooses to attend or not, but I am seeing the movie. So far he as agreed. AND has even attended them with me.
He's never asked me why. Or questioned the obsession. Never given me the I-can't-believe-your-30 look when I swoon and gush at the mention of his name. Or that there is like a one in a million chance I will EVER see him walking the streets of Chicago (since you know his family still lives in the area, and he was once living here...). Or that I am living in some weird, twisted, time warp that has captured my mind in some sort of arrested development that doesn't allow me to go beyond a mere infatuation with a movie star.
I've even made him a sorta-fan (can you believe he has NEVER watched Say Anything until a lazy Sunday afternoon about 6 months ago!). I won't say he rushes to the theater to see ANY and ALL Cusack movies--but ask him about Grosse Point Blank. Or High Fidelity. Or Identity (and no, I watched Serendipity--he, not so much. But I did drag him to American Sweethearts. And he might admit to watching it). He's watched them--and dare I say--enjoyed them.
I haven't converted him into a raving-lunatic-type fan like myself--and it is likely he will never be converted. BUT, I dare you to ask any near 30 year old 1980s, hairspray, big hair, Like a Virgin singing, high-water, Guess jean wearing woman--who's your favorite movie star? I bet John Cusack is near the top of the list. He's understated, shies away from the spotlight, and seems to be the all around nice guy, who just happens to star in movies. Perfect movie-star crush material for a terribly understated, wish-I-were-in-the-spotlight type a gal like me.
