Are we Hard-Wired as Writers?

Wednesday, September 28, 2005 by Bethany

I was blog surfing last night ( imagine that!) and landed on a post at Boomer Chick. It peaked my interest. Dorothy had been blog hopping herself and came across a post at yet another blog post by Chris at _holm about this first realization of being a writer. His post is one of those I knew I was a writer when sorta stories and Dorothy came across a conclusion that was profound:

"...And what I found so coincidental was that his first story that he wrote as a child had the same theme as what he is writing now."

And then she went on to talk about her first stories, and what they were about, and the characters, and the locations, etc. And you know what? She writes the SAME GENRE now--but more grown up, and a little bit more on target, and a little more adult-like-- BUT THE SAME STUFF!

So--can you see where this is going?--I, too, did this little experiment. And, first, no--I did not write computer/technology related stories when I was 8 like I do for my day job (God help my parents if I did! Then again, I could have been the female version of Steve Jobs or Bill Gates, eh? ). But, what I DID write then have huge similarities to my fiction adventures.

My first story was about a girl and elves who she happens to see on her way to school. What I write now, definitely doesn't have short squatty elves with long beards--but it does have paranormal/magical elements like a genie, named Gene who looks a lot like Fabio but, well, nicer looking. And my stories are centered around women-- and sometimes school (as the main characters have been mothers)... so, without stretching this theory too much--it DOES hold true for me as well. I am STILL, after 22 years, writing paranormal stories! Does anyone else find this odd?

So, I am with Dorothy on this one-- ARE WE HARD-WIRED AS WRITERS? Please, come one, if you are a writer, wanna-be writer, one-who-isn't-ready-to-admit-you-are-a-writer, spill the beans. What were your first adventures with the written word and are you STILL writing about these same characters, situations, or locations now?

Yes, I think we're born writers. Well, I think we're at least born readers. From there, we kind of bloom into writers. Maybe.

Heck, I have no bloody idea. If you find out, be sure to let me know!

You know, I approached this blog thing with the attitude that I'd dance like no one was looking. Imagine my surprise that there just so happens to be a couple of folks dancing right along with me!

Thanks for stopping by -- I'll be sure to return the favor from time to time. I really dig what I've seen so far! Best of luck,
c

Oh, and THANK GOD you weren't writing technical manuals as a child. God knows I wasn't writing scientific papers, but you've gotta have a day job, right?

LOL, thanks oh-so-much for the plug! But isn't it weird how we write basically what we found enjoyable to write as a kid? Interesting stuff! Hey, is it all right to add your blog link to my blog? Didn't think you minded, but wanted to make sure.
