Are we Hard-Wired as Writers?
"...And what I found so coincidental was that his first story that he wrote as a child had the same theme as what he is writing now."And then she went on to talk about her first stories, and what they were about, and the characters, and the locations, etc. And you know what? She writes the SAME GENRE now--but more grown up, and a little bit more on target, and a little more adult-like-- BUT THE SAME STUFF!
So--can you see where this is going?--I, too, did this little experiment. And, first, no--I did not write computer/technology related stories when I was 8 like I do for my day job (God help my parents if I did! Then again, I could have been the female version of Steve Jobs or Bill Gates, eh?
My first story was about a girl and elves who she happens to see on her way to school. What I write now, definitely doesn't have short squatty elves with long beards--but it does have paranormal/magical elements like a genie, named Gene who looks a lot like Fabio but, well, nicer looking. And my stories are centered around women-- and sometimes school (as the main characters have been mothers)... so, without stretching this theory too much--it DOES hold true for me as well. I am STILL, after 22 years, writing paranormal stories! Does anyone else find this odd?
So, I am with Dorothy on this one-- ARE WE HARD-WIRED AS WRITERS? Please, come one, if you are a writer, wanna-be writer, one-who-isn't-ready-to-admit-you-are-a-writer, spill the beans. What were your first adventures with the written word and are you STILL writing about these same characters, situations, or locations now?
