Work Attire: Men vs. Women

Tuesday, June 21, 2005 by Bethany

In the entirety of my life, I never wished I was a man. Even with the chance of pregnancy, the good ole menstrual cycle, breasts, thundering thighs, high school girl teasing- you name it, I didn't want anything to do with the other sex (like who wanted to deal with boners in class at the sight of the pretties girl, hazing into the football team, or just plain old being good in shoppe class?). Being a woman was fine by me.

Now this point of view has changed--at least on the work wardrobe front. I mean, men-workplace-clothing? Easy as pie. Even the trendiest of the men have it easy for clothing. shirt, pants. That's it. Special occasion? Want to knock the socks off a woman? Wear some suit and tie combination and you are set. Really. The possibilities are endless.

Just fill your wardrobe with every button down shirt you can find in short and long sleeves, a few suit jackets, and nice FLAT front pants- and you are good to go. Any occasion. Business meeting, after-business drinks. You are set.

Now, if you are a women? And not a woman that is a size 1 or say 4? We could be here a while. Sheesh. I mean, really. Skirt? Button down shirt or sweater? Twin set or trendy blazer? And shoes? I could be here forever.

I've noticed two types of women at work-- clothing wise that is-- those who are trendy and those who are at least 10 years ago. There is no inbetween. The 10-years-ago crowd still have the high water pants with the flats with the rounded toe shoes. Twin set with paisley flowers and hair that is puffier than a good whip topping on a coffee. The trendy types? Well, need I give you a description? Just look at any GAP commercial or women's magazine and they could be walking right along with these women.

I know you are dying to know where I fit in. God knows, I'd love to be trendy and I try. I do. But being *of larger size* (meaning any size larger than an 8) I can only imagine what I look like. Maybe I am in the third style- the wanna-be-trendy-but-not-quite-hacking-it group?
