And we have a Biter!

Wednesday, April 06, 2005 by Bethany

"Mooooom!" the little guy said running around the high counter and hugging my leg as I picked him up from day care.

Something was wrong. Only the bad kids sit behind the counter. "What did he do?" I asked eyeing the director of the center while signing out my son.

"He bit someone."

"He bit someone?"

"Yep, while playing today."

Now all you childless readers out there (do you exist?), this statement hurts. I mean, if you child was being bitten by another child how would you feel? Now, turn the table--your child is the biter.

Ugh.

I picked him up yesterday. And guess what? He wasn't behind the counter. But he DID bite. Again.

What am I supposed to do? I mean, I am not there when he is committing the crime--so there is no way to *punish* him (well in my world scold him and explain it hurts). So, I am forced to rely on the teachers in his room. Now this is typically all well and good. And this time it is too. But I wish they'd quit eyeing me like I had the devil's child. He is 2! It is common for him to bite. Can I help it he does bite me at home so that I can scold him? Can I help it that he doesn't have a sibling around to fight over toys?

Jeez people. It isn't like I am telling him every morning, "All right kiddo--time for school! Go bite your classmates!"

This is definitely a case of Your child Does Wrong--Mommy is Doing Something Wrong Syndrome. And if you are a parent, you will understand when I say this sucks. And is INAPPROPRIATE behavior for you to exhibit to another parent. You and I both know there isn't much I can do or say to him, a two year old, four hours after the incident. Trust me, as a parent/mother/provider, that if he does this at home, I will talk to him, scold him, do what I need to do. But, stop the glaring and the unspoken "must be a bad mother" thoughts when I walk in after a long day of work to pick up my child.

I deserve to greet him when I pick him up with a smile and a hug. No matter what happened earlier in the day. He deserves that too.
